Have been struggling to make sense of Nary's motivations, but his actions make more sense if he's trying to make Sette tough enough to kill him.
Are Nary’s motivations that opaque? Unlike much of our cast, he states them in plain language on the page. Nary’s a very straight-shooter. Sette admires that about him. Da says what he means and he’s brave and strong enough to back it up.
His feelings towards Sette are a little more nebulous though, for sure. Do you believe Starfish? Or do you believe what Sette seems to feel in her heart? Da is a man of many mysteries and puzzles and traps.
He definitely isn’t a doting father but he so straight forward that I don’t think he would pretend to like her. He was nice enough in the letter even had a cute pointy princess bit. Between that and beadman if nothing else he has faith in Sette’s ability. That being said he like Stock didn’t want to be a crime boss in shart forever I doubt he likes that Sette aspires to be what he hated being.
